(Tech.) Kimmo Rasilainen The intermodulation measurement technique enables the contactless measurement of transponder antennas by exploiting the inherent nonlinearity of the transponder to generate intermodulation products that can be measured. This intermodulation response can then be used to characterize the antenna. In this master’s thesis, this characterization technique is developed further. The theoretical intermodulation response for a harmonic transponder is derived, and this response is then used in measurements to characterize the transponder antenna. Limitations of the dynamic range of the measurement are discussed. The measurement can be performed using different arrangements of the measurement antennas. Three potential measurement geometries are discussed and compared: monostatic, bistatic, and multistatic. A measurement software is created for controlling the measurement. The derived theory is validated by experiments. The measured intermodulation response of a harmonic transponder is compared with the theoretical response. The measurement technique is then used to measure the gain of the transponder antenna using bistatic geometry. The impedance matching of the transponder is also measured. The results show good agreement between the derived theory and the measurements. Based on the results, it can be said that the technique is well-suited for characterizing harmonic transponders.

Intermodulation distortion in switched multibeam antennas for cellular radio systems

The performance of switched multibeam antennas for cellular radio systems is investigated when the transmit amplifier is of a multicarrier (MCPA) type. The MCPA nonlinearity generates intermodulation distortion in the transmitted signal that is spatially filtered by the array radiation pattern. Hence, the intermodulation distortion becomes direction-dependent, and the direction of the generated...

Considering Downlink Intermodulation Distortion in Switched Multibeam Antennas for Cellular Radio Systems

The performance and feasibility of switched multibeam array antennas in cellular systems is investigated. We assume that multicarrier power amplifiers (MCPA:s) are used in the base-station, to co-amplify the transmitted signals. The MCPA generates intermodulation distortion and it is shown how the multibeam antenna makes the radiated intermodulation distortion dependent on the azimuthal lookdir...

Spurious free dynamic range for a digitizing array

This paper addresses the problem of improving the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) for digitization by use of antenna arrays. Nonlinearities in the analog-to-digital conversion process give rise to spurious signals (harmonics and intermodulation products) that limit the overall SFDR of the digitization process. When the signal of interest arises from a sensor such as an antenna or hydrophone,...

Studies on Microwave Antennas: Passive Intermodulation Distortion in Antenna Structures and Design of Microstrip Antenna Elements

Passive intermodulation (PIM) measurements of antennas and the design of dual-polarised microstrip antenna elements are investigated in this thesis. The emphasis is on the development of a passive intermodulation source localisation method and on the studies of the PIM source behaviour under various impedance loading conditions. Passive intermodulation distortion can be harmful in wireless comm...

Performance of Coded Multicarrier Multiple Transmit Antenna DS-CDMA Systems in the Presence of Power Amplifier Nonlinearity

Absfmcl-Mile a multicarrier approach of achieving frequency diversity performs well in the presence of jamming, it suffers from the eNeeets of intermodulation distortion (IMD) due to power amplifier (PA) nonlinearity. On the other hand, transmit diversity using multiple transmit antennas tias the benefit of no IMD effccts, but suffers from a larger performance degradation due to jamming compare...
